The HCL MiLeap is a small form factor tablet PC which will mainly attract you for its compact size and stylish looks. Besides looks, let’s find out what more it offers!
Features: Powered by an Intel A110, 800 MHz mobile processor, it is based on the Intel 945G chipset. The lower FSB and clock speeds conserve power and the MiLeap impressively offers more than three hours of usage time. Its basic configuration along with 1 GB DDR2-667 RAM, should easily handle all your office work. The onboard graphics—Intel 945G—is good enough for watching movies, but intensive graphics processing is not happening on this one.
The stylus and the 7-inch touch panel, make a good digital notepad. Using hotkeys on either side, you can rotate the screen, launch the webcam, and adjust the screen brightness and so on. The standard connectors include two USB ports, card readers (CF/SD), an Ethernet port, audio jacks and a VGA port. Finally, the package contains an OS recovery disk, Microsoft Works 8.5 and a driver disk which make it a good deal.Build quality: The most striking feature of the iLeap is its portability, stylish looks and the sturdy build. The iLeap is so light and handy, that you can even carry it like a personal diary.
The touchpad and buttons are manageable; however, people with large or fat fingers would find typing difficult on this model. But, if you need a PC of this form factor, then you obviously can’t have standard sized keys. The quality of the plastic used and the glossy screen is pretty impressive.
Performance: With a basic configuration, such as what this tablet PC has, stellar performance is certainly not expected. The iLeap is mainly intended for mainstream applications. For instance, running Microsoft Office, sending/receiving e-mails and running other work related applications is quite effortless.
The only contender that comes closest to the iLeap in terms of price and portability is the Asus Eee PC. However, the Eee PC doesn’t offer as much as the iLeap does, for instance, the former has upto 8 GB SSD hard drive and a native resolution of 800x480, where as the latter has an 80 GB hard drive and a native resolution of 1024x600. More so, the latter is a tablet PC, so the feature set offered is certainly superior.Verdict: This is by far, the most affordable ultra portable tablet PC we have come across. If you are a frequent traveler and all you need is a light and portable PC to use only for office work, this one’s for you.But remember, typing is a bit inconvenient with those miniature sized keys.

Canon PowerShot A720 IS

The Canon PowerShot A710 IS was the first budget digital camera to offer image stabilization along with 6x optical zoom. The camera recently underwent a face-lift to include an updated image processor and a few feature tweaks. The outcome is the much more capable Canon A720 IS. So what’s new?
Features: The most notable addition in the A720 IS is the new DIGIC III processor which adds multiple face detection to its already-lengthy list of features. So you can now get well-focused faces in group photos and portraits. The resolution of the image sensor has also been bumped from 7.1 MP to 8 MP along with the ISO range extending to 1600.
Belonging to the PowerShot A series of cameras, the A720 IS offers an excellent feature set with a good blend of automatic and manual controls. Those who aren’t familiar with exposure controls can use the automatic mode and shooting modes such as portrait, landscape, night snapshot, kids and pets, and indoor—the camera automatically adjusts the aperture, shutter speed, ISO speed and flash intensity depending on the environment. In addition to this there are seven scene modes including snow, beach, and fireworks. It was quite surprising to find the most creative scenes, color swap and color accent, deducted from the list.
Those who are familiar with exposure controls can use the shutter priority, aperture priority, and manual modes in combination with ISO speeds, white balance settings and flash levels for precise exposure and detail production. The camera draws power from two AA batteries and offers support for SD, SDHC and MMC cards for storage—there is no internal storage.
Build quality and ergonomics: The build quality of the camera is better than that of others belonging to the PowerShot A series. Yet, the quality of the shell and buttons need improvement. Like most of the digital cameras by Canon, this one too offers good ergonomics. The control panels features four buttons (display, menu, print and delete) and 5-way navigation control. There’s a switch on the top right corner of the back panel to switch between capture and playback modes.
The user interface is quite intuitive with all the functions displayed in a column on the left of the 2.5-inch LCD display. The options are displayed in a row on the bottom—typically Canon! The camera sports a boxy design offering a good right-handed grip with fingers curling around the battery compartment. The controls can be accessed using your thumb.
Performance: The camera excels in performance with good reproduction of colors and details. With a 6x optical zoom, this camera has an edge over other cameras in its category when it comes to capturing distant objects. The optical image stabilization works wonders with low shutter speeds and high zoom. The ISO speed is usable up to 200 after which you will notice significant noise. So avoid using ISO speeds greater than 200 unless you’re in a poorly lit environment. The biggest drawback is the lengthy flash recycle time—it takes around 12 seconds for the flash to charge up for the next shot. No doubt you can miss a great shot in that much time, but overall this camera is worth a buy if you’re looking for a budget digital camera with plenty of features and excellent performance.

The cost of laser printing equipment would be quite high but the average running cost is lower than common inkjet printers. When buying one of these type of printers, check for its monthly duty cycle, types of paper handling, the capacity (pages-per-cartridge) and cost and availability of toner cartridges. Check if the toner cartridge can be refilled, though it is not recommended and in some cases, it’s not possible. The cartridges are quite expensive, at around, Rs 3,000 - 4,000, but the cost per page dips to around Rs 1 per page (inkjet printers have a cost of approximately Rs. 2.5 per page).

Inkjet printers are prone to multiple problems in the long run, for example, smudged prints, clogging or drying up of the print heads, etc because they use liquid ink. But print quality is best found only on these types of printers. If you are into photo printing as a hobby, opt for printers like Epson or HP inkjet, which make use of Durabrite and Vivera inks respectively. These inks give brilliant print quality, they help keep your photos safe from water hazards and the prints can last for as long as 100 years.
Look out for printers that can print on various types of printable media, like recycled paper, photo glossy and matt finish papers, transparencies and inkjet printable CD/DVD’s to suit future needs. Also look out for printers that have individual tanks for colors—Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black, so you can change only the colors that have exhausted. Some printers have a larger black ink tank for higher quantity black prints. Canon and Epson have separate print heads and are costly when damaged due to dry or clogged nozzles. Prefer printers like HP which have ink cartridges combined with the ink tank and the print head so whenever you run out of ink, you replace the ink tank and the head completely at one go.

Some companies throw a built-in card reader making it a complete AIO device for those in the professional photography and designing field.When buying MFDs, opt for an inkjet technology, which can give better resolution prints with more than 1440 dpi, instead of laser technology, which can print a maximum of around 600 or 1200 dpi.Some MFDs, like the low-noise Samsung SCX-4500, add a style statement to your work area, while some can print really fast copies, for instance, Brother MFDs.
Brother has a range of MFDs that also include a facsimile with a digital answering machine in some of its AIOs. Look out for an MFD which can save space on your desktop to maintain a convenient computing area. Also check for good scanning resolutions when buying an MFD.
